Skills Group

Skills groups help teens, adults, and families who struggle to problem solve through difficult situations due to the intensity of emotions.

There is no doubt that you have had to adapt and develop your own coping skills to get short-term relief from your emotions and struggles. Constantly working to cope and survive can leave you fatigued from constantly trying to deal with the next crisis.

Most people who join DBT Skills Group feel like they have never been taught how to deal with the types of things you are facing in life. Getting the skills you need is a starting point for gaining control and will help you to manage stuff that comes up in your life. It's never too late to learn the skills that you were not taught as a child.

Skills Training is a type of group therapy that consists of 90 minute, weekly sessions that help you learn DBT skills.

Here’s how it will work step-by-step:

1. First, you will be oriented to DBT during weekly individual therapy sessions (2-3 weeks). Together, we will explore your commitment and stages of readiness to begin skills training.

2. If we both agree that skills group is the right fit for you, we will make a commitment to begin treatment. You will begin attending a weekly DBT skills group to learn skills for mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

3. You will be supplied with electronic workbooks and handouts needed in order to participate in the class.

4. You will attend group weekly (see schedules below), complete homework between sessions, and review homework assignment and skills learned with your individual DBT therapist.

5. You will begin to see measurable changes in your functioning as demonstrated on the diary card, where you will track emotions, urges, actions, and skills use throughout the week.

Research shows that DBT Therapy can positively change your thinking, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. It can help you let go of the misery that's holding you back.
